Material Classes

Material classes are classifications for material items stored in inventory. For example, the HVAC material class might be used to classify air filters, fan belts, and thermostats. The values you define here populate the Material Class drop-down menu on the Create Inventory page.

To open the Material Classes page:

  1. Open the Administration Menu page.

  2. Under either the INVENTORY ADMIN or WORK ORDER ADMIN heading, click Material Classes.

To add a material class:

  1. In the Add Material Class field, enter the name of the material class.
  2. Click ADD.

    A dialog box opens asking you to confirm your choice.

  3. Click OK.

ClosedEdit a Material Class

Once you have created a material class, you can further define it or edit it. To edit a material class:

  1. In the Material Class field, select the material class to edit.

  2. To change the display order, enter a value in the Tab Order field.

    The Tab Order indicates the position, in menus, where this value will be listed. Lower numbered values are displayed toward the top of the list. Values will the same tab order will be sorted alphabetically.

  3. To change the name of the material class, enter a value in the Rename field.

    All historical information will reflect the new value.

  4. In the Income Category field, enter an income category used with an external system.
  5. In the Chart of Accounts field, select a chart of accounts.

  6. In the GL Account field, select a general ledger account.
  7. In the GL Account for Markup field, select a general ledger account for the markup.
  8. In the Tax Status field, select a value to indicate whether this material class is taxable.

  9. To change the status, select a value from the Status field.

    Material classes with a status of Inactive are not displayed to users. However, inactivating a material class does not affect the existing inventory items that utilize it.

  10. Click UPDATE.

ClosedDelete a Material Class

Material classes that have not been used can be deleted from the system. If a material class has been associated with an inventory item, it cannot be deleted.

Material classes that cannot be deleted can be inactivated to prevent users from accessing them.

To delete a material classes:

  1. In the Material Class field, select the material class to delete.

  2. Click Delete.

    A dialog box opens asking you to confirm your choice.

  3. Click OK.
